Aims of Broulee PS P&C Gonski Sub-Committee
- Aims of Broulee PS P&C Gonski Sub-Committee
Broulee PS P&C believes that every Australian child is entitled to a free public education system which is high quality, fair and inclusive. We believe that public funds spent on education should be properly, fairly and transparently administered via policies that are based on research and evidence of best outcomes, not on political ideology which changes regularly. A needs-based funding scheme is the foundation of equality of opportunity that will allow our nation's children to reach their fullest potential. We recognise our children as this country's greatest future asset, and their future as worthy of sound investment.

We aim to raise awareness and spur the community to action about short-sighted government education policies and funding cuts. We will collaborate with other concerned groups to:
- Highlight the dire implications of current government plans to withdraw support for the Gonski Review recommendations
- Translate and publicise research and other credible information into accessible forms for the general public
- Inform our communities about current issues in education to help make more evidence-based decisions and take action in our electorate
Below is a link to a short video about Gonski, titled simply, “What is Gonski?” At only a minute and a half it is worth watching to give you an understanding of what Gonski is and how it would work to achieve fairer school funding.

Who is on the Broulee PS P&C Gonski Sub-Committee?
Chairperson Jesse Rowan
Jesse is a mother of three (two in primary and one in secondary school) who has been active on Broulee PS P&C for about 7 years. Jesse runs a small business with her partner Terry McGee, making fine wooden keyed flutes which are sold mainly overseas. They also play music together and run the monthly Old Gold Folk Club at the Original Gold Rush Colony in Mogo.
What led you to be a part of this Sub-Committee?
'My disappointment at seeing Gonski funding cut off, even before its effects could even properly begin to be measured, compelled me to start thoughtful action within our school P&C Association and led me to being part of the Gonski lobbying day in Canberra in June. Going to Canberra to talk to MPs was the first time I have been moved to take action over a political policy decision, though I've often wanted to. Forming the Gonski Sub Committee flowed out of these experiences,' Jesse says.

Nerida Bourke
Nerida has taught in public schools for nearly 30yrs and has been a strong advocate for public education. She has served as a Representative of Moruya Teachers Federation to monthly Teacher's Federation Council Meetings.
What led you to be a part of this Sub-Committee?
'I believe every child deserves the opportunity to develop and thrive in a well resourced, supportive environment where twenty first century skills are encouraged and fostered. All schools should have teachers who are innovative, professional and highly trained with the resources to enable them to do their job. The full Gonski funding is desperately needed so Australian schools can keep pace with a changing world, and educate all our children to a high standard,' says Nerida.

Tania Dorney
Tania is currently a Learning and Support Teacher at Broulee Public School. She has worked in rural and remote communities and with Indigenous and low socio-economic students.
What led you to be a part of this Sub-Committee?
'I joined because I would like to see Gonski funding become a reality in Australian schools. As a Learning and Support Teacher I have seen how students grow and learn when given appropriate intervention. Some students require just a little intervention, others require ongoing support. I have noticed time and time again how it is that second or third reading intervention that really makes a difference for some struggling students. Unfortunately, it is difficult for schools to deliver this level of support. I would like to see students having access to the help they need in literacy and numeracy as this gives them the greatest chance of being successful in life. I believe if we invest in our children, we invest in our nation's future,' Tania says.
